Net ‘to drain all Britain’s power’ article highlights

Further to the recent Sunday Times article “Net ‘to drain all Britain’s power’ click here to view, last week the Royal Society heard from leading scientists about the impact to Britain of the exponential rise in data demanded from the internet. Specifically, they were addressing its impact both upon electrical power consumption in Britain and the operational bandwidth of existing internet infrastructure technology.

Regarding impact of electrical power consumption, the audience were to hear claims that the internet is already consuming at least 8% of Britain’s generated electrical power! Based upon the expected growth in demand for data, theory suggests that by 2035 it could consume all of Britain’s expected generating capacity!

Regarding existing internet infrastructure capacity the audience were to hear that with the growing exponential demand for data, driven by online video demand rising by 25 – 30% per year, that existing cables and hardware supporting this demand would hit their current performance limits by 2020!

We might imagine Britain is not the only nation in the developed world that is affected by these issues.

So short to medium term solutions could be smarter application of the IoT (Internet of Things) such that not every single “Edge” device need be an IP address on the internet but nevertheless seamlessly accessible for commissioning, control, maintenance, management, visualisation and analytics.

Example of such smart IoT thinking would be – instead of a single light fixture per internet IP address why not 64 light fixtures per IP address?

In one step reduced IP port demand, providing seamless internet light fixture device access from anywhere and all with global open standards enabling highly vendor independent smart lighting solutions to be delivered world-wide.

Does such a solution exist, of course, click here to learn more.
